"You brought two state championship teams together. We set the tone for a lot of good things to happen for Starkville."
Just as relationship building is vital to student success today, it was perhaps even more important in 1970 as Starkville High School and Henderson High School prepared to integrate. Long before students began participating in classes together, players from two championship schools put in the work to become one team.
From working out during spring training together to team dinners at Starkville Cafe before each game, building relationships between players on and off the field set the tone for good things as the Class of 1971 took the field and the classroom for the first fully integrated school year at Starkville High School.
Henry Vaughn was an All-Little Ten tailback and Most Valuable Player award recipient on that team, and he shared memories from the first fully integrated school year. Watch to hear some of his story, and join us on October 22 as we premiere a compilation of oral history from the SHS Class of 1971.
