50 Years & Counting: A First Step

Debbie Murphy, SHS Class of 1971

"It was something that desperately needed to happen. It was just a first step in many steps, and I'm very thankful."

As we continue our celebration of fifty years of full integration at Starkville High School, we share stories of those who took that first step together in the fall of 1970. For many students like SHS Class of 1971 graduate Debbie Murphy, first steps turned into new friendships.

Mrs. Murphy played on the SHS varsity girls basketball team, and also served as a senior class officer. As an avid football fan, she remembers traveling to every Friday night contest in the 1970 season as a member of the SHS Pep Squad. Through the uncertainty of that first year with a combined student body, sports again served to lead students toward unity and cooperation centered around competing together as one Yellow Jacket team.

Mrs. Murphy shared her memories of that first fully integrated school year. Watch to hear some of her story, and join us on October 22 as we premiere a compilation of oral history from the SHS Class of 1971.
