Henderson Ward Stewart Elementary School teacher Stella Turman, a 10 year teaching veteran, is honored for always going the extra yard for her students. Mississippi State University recognized Ms. Turman on the field at Davis Wade Stadium with the College Football Playoff Foundation Extra Yard For Teachers Award which champions great classroom teachers and elevates the teaching profession by inspiring and empowering teachers.
"Every teacher in the SOCSD goes the extra yard for their students, and I share this award with each of them," said Turman.
Ms. Turman holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Elementary Education from Mississippi State University. She earned her Specialist in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University. She has also completed intensive training for Kagan Cooperative Learning and Fountas and Pinnel Literacy.
"Ms. Turman works to create a family with in her classroom that loves and supports one another," said Supt. Eddie Peasant. "The relationships she builds with her students will have an impact far beyond her classoom."
"I believe the Lord instilled a passion in me to help others, and I have always had a heart for the underdog," said Turman. "At some point in every person's life, they will be the underdog, and I hope if it happens to one of my students while they are in my classroom or after they leave my classroom, they know I will be cheering for them and ready to help them in any way I possibly can."
"My goal each and every day is for my students – past, present, and future - to feel loved and appreciated."
Ms. Turman's recognition also included a $250 gift card from Donors Choose.
