Starkville Rotary Club recognized SOSD Director of Choral Activities, Jennifer Davis, as Outstanding Teacher for the month of October. Davis was recently named the Mississippi High School Activities Association Music Educator of the Year for 2023.
In addition, Mrs. Davis chose two Starkville High School choral students to be recognized by Starkville Rotary Club as Outstanding Students for the month of October. She chose SHS seniors, Anthony "AJ" Chandler and Aubree Montgomery to be honored during the October 2 Rotary Club meeting.
"Anthony and Aubree were chosen as outstanding choral members because they represent the highest standard in our department," Davis said. "They always go above and beyond what is asked for in rehearsals, and they excel outside the classroom as well. I'm really proud of them."
Anthony "AJ" Chandler has been involved in the Yellow Jacket Choral activities since 7th grade and has earned recognition as an All-State Choir member each year. He is recognized as the #4 bass singer in the state, and is also enrolled in Piano and AP Music Theory at SHS. Last summer, AJ volunteered as a counselor for the Jacket Thrive Intersession SPARK ART camp for elementary students. In addition to maintaining good grades, he also works a part-time job.
Aubree Montgomery is a three-year member of the SHS Choir and has earned recognition as an All-State Choir member. She was recognized as a top five alto singer in the state during her junior year, and was also recently chosen as a soloist at choral events hosted by Mississippi State University and University of Southern Mississippi. In addition to her choral excellence, Aubree is also a memeber of the Yellow Jacket softball and girls basketball teams.
Starkville Rotary Club supports education in the Starkville and Oktibbeha community by recognizing outstanding teachers and students. The group also spearheads the Oktibbeha Young Leaders program designed to build leadership among high school 10th graders.
