SHS Juniors take on state-wide leadership roles in SkillsUSA program

SHS students selected for statewide office

Two Starkville High School 11th graders will spend the school year as state officers for the Mississippi SkillsUSA organization, leading their peers from across the state. Mackenzie Mays, will serve as President, and Kayla Snell will serve as Secretary. The SHS chapter of SkillsUSA provides real-world leadership opportunities and workforce skills for students in the Law and Public Safety CTE pathway.

During the Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District's Fall Intersession, members of the SHS SkillsUSA chapter participated in the Mississippi affiliate's Fall Leadership Conference at Mississippi College. Students had the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills, network with peers, and prepare for future competitions and leadership roles within the organization. Mackenzie and Kayla also met with the state SkillsUSA director as well as the Dean of  Enrollment & Admissions at Mississippi College to learn about opportunities. Heather Fair, the SHS SkillsUSA faculty sponsor and Law and Public Safety instructor, will also serve as a state advisor this year.

Students participate in regional, state and national competitions each year designed to hone their leadership skills, prepare them for real-world tasks from the workplace and open opportunities to be career-ready.
