SOCSD Students Win with MSU Basketball and Coaching for Literacy

By Nicole Thomas

Coaching for Literacy, Mississippi State men’s basketball and head coach Ben Howland want reading to be a slam dunk for students in the Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District.

Mississippi State will host a Coaching for Literacy Awareness Game on Feb. 11 when the Bulldogs take on the South Carolina Gamecocks at Humphrey Coliseum at 7 p.m. on ESPN2, and funds raised will support literacy efforts in the Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District.

Last year the support of Mississippi State athletics and generous Coaching for Literacy donors provided science literacy books for 870 third and fourth grade students through the District’s Youth Environmental Science (YES) program.  The “Reading is in our Nature” program also included a special guest speaker who brought along an alligator to visit the school as part of a presentation on reptiles to introduce the science literacy program to students.

“We are very thankful for Coaching for Literacy’s support this past year,” said Dr. Jody Woodrum, assistant superintendent of SOCSD. “With our partnership, we hope to increase our students’ love of learning and science.”

Yellow Jacket and Bulldog fans can support the effort by following Coaching for Literacy on Twitter @coachingforlit and using the hashtag #Bulldogs4Literacy.

For every retweet with #Bulldogs4Literacy @CoachingforLit donates $1 to @StarkvilleSD!
