SHS Students Awarded 15 Honors at Region V Mississippi Science and Engineering Fair; Advance to State and National Fair

Five SHS students won a total of 15 awards, including two Best of Fair honors, at the Region V Mississippi Science and Engineering Fair held at Mississippi State University.

Helen Peng and Cici Zhang each won Best of Fair, which allows them to advance straight to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona in May. Hamilton Wan was named an alternate to ISEF.

Helen, Cici, and Hamilton, along with Jongik Lee and Tanzim Hassan, will also compete at MSEF state competition in April.

SHS Region V MSEF Awards and Honors

Cici Zhang, “From Greenhouse Gas and Environmental Waste to Value-Added Products: Using Carbon-Encapsulated Copper Nanoparticles for Catalytic Conversion of Carbon Dioxide to Methanol”

  • 1st Place in Earth, Space, and Environmental Sciences (Class 5)
  • Best of Show MSEF (Compete at ISEF)
  • Ability and Creativity in an Atmospheric Science Exhibit Award from the American Methodological Society
  • Taking the Pulse of the Planet Award from the National oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce
  • Most Outstanding Exhibit in Materials Science Award from ASM Material Education Foundation
  • Student Award for Geoscience Excellence 2016 – Outstanding Project in Earth, Space and Environmental from the Association for Women Geoscientists
  • Ricoh Sustainable Development Award 2016 from the Ricoh Americas Corporation

  • 1st Place in Microbiology (Class 4)
  • Best of Show MSEF (Compete at ISEF)

Hamilton Wan, “The Effects of Vaccination on the Spread of Ebola”

  • 2nd Place in Medicine and Health (Class 4)
  • Navy Award
  • Best of Show Alternate (Attend ISEF)

Tanzim Hassan, “Pan-Cancer Transcriptomic Network Analysis”

  • 2nd Place in Medicine and Health (Class 5)
  • Navy Award

 Jongik Lee: “The Strongest Propeller”

  • 1st Place in Engineering, Computers, and Math (Class 4)

AMS students Guille Hoffman- Meyer and Linda Arnoldus also advanced to the MSEF state competition.

Guille and Linda earned second place in their respective categories.
