Woomer to Compete for Midshipmen

By Nicole Thomas

SHS senior Emily Woomer has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete in track and field at the United States Naval Academy. Emily will spend her first year at the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) in Newport, Rhode Island, before heading to USNA in Annapolis, Maryland.

“I’m really excited about competing at the Division I  level,” said Emily.

Emily is the third person in her family to receive an appointment to USNA. Two of her brothers, Grant and Stuart Woomer, are midshipmen in the Class of 2018.  Emily’s oldest brother, Hudson, is a second lieutenant in the Navy.

Although Emily realizes it is difficult to fully prepare for mentally and physically for the demands of the Naval Academy, she plans to lean on her experiences at SHS.

Emily has competed as a runner since fifth grade.  She currently holds the fastest time in the 400m in indoor track in Mississippi. Emily also played volleyball for the Jackets for six years.

Emily trains equally as hard in the classroom as she does on the track.  She’s a member of the National Honor Society, and she will graduate with honors from SHS in May.  Emily has taken AP Calculus, AP European History and numerous honors  courses while at SHS.  Emily plans to major in Chinese at USNA.
